AHCA Spring Gymkhana

Yesterday, a gymkhana was held in Warrenville Illinois in the parking lot of the AMC Canterra Theaters.  There was a Mki Sprite and MkII Sprite, and 1 Mg Midget (mine).  in addition were a smattering of other cars.  There were a few MGBs an MGA some lotuses, a BMW big healeys, a new mini, and even a honda civic.  This is a fin event run every year by the Chicagoland chapter of the Austin Healey Club of America.  This year my brother joined me and competed against me by borrowing my car.  In addition to having a good time, it gave me the chance to put my stickypod through it’s paces.  I am happy to report that it worked beautifully.

This year I found the course especially interesting and challenging.  There was the usual slalom section , but there was also a mini slalom heading into a left hander marked by cones that appeared to be pointing both ways.  This lead me of course for both my practice run and at least one timed run.  My brother started out in the mid 50’s and really surprised himself.  His first few runs were rather lazy and careful, but after he got comfortable with the car he was squealing the tires off the line and power sliding and having a grand ol’ time.    He also pointed out that since he went later that day, he had black tire marks on the pavement to help guide him.  I managed to shave off about 8 seconds by the end of the day.  I managed to get my time down to 41.6 seconds but I feel I could have been even faster if I hadn’t spent so much time just trying to find out where the course was!

Below is an aerial photo of the parking lot.  The course changes each year.  I will try to reconstruct this years course sometime.
